This unabridged audio edition of my latest book, “Life is Not a Destination,” came about because of a visit to the Jacobetti Veterans Home in Marquette, in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. Being an ex-GI myself, whenever I write a new book I make it a practice to drop a couple off at that facility “for the troops.”
On one trip I was visiting with one of the staff. The staff member mentioned that some of the residents were no longer able to read as well as they once could. He added that they were asking if he, the staff member, wouldn’t please read the book to them. That was a shot to my ego. With demand like that how could I not publish this audio version?
As does the book, “Life is Not a Destination,” audio version contains several of my articles that have been published in the Mining Journal, Marquette’s local newspaper. The subjects vary – some may even say I wander – but each of the stories are excerpts from real life. Each story stands by itself, with a little humor, a little adventure now and then, some really fine people I have had the pleasure to know and learn from and of course a bum or two which, unfortunately, I learned from also.
Come sail across the Gulf of Mexico with me. Go on a treasure hunt with my two grandsons, ages about six and eight years old, among the South Texas sand dunes, notorious hang-outs for pirates “in the olden day.” For those of you so inclined there are a couple brief poems about two other grandsons, four and six. Come fly through a snowstorm in the dark of night to rescue two little girls, newborn and premature who “ain’t gonna make it if we don’t go get ‘em.” Meditate with me while sitting in a woodyard. Gaze into the flickering flames of a nite time campfire in the winter woods as I show my son the star patterns and polaris. Watch the sun come up over the big lake, come with us as we feel our way through a thick fog and – well – you get the idea.
